A camping trip around Europe in 2009 led us to the medieval town of Lienz in Austria, overlooked by the snow-capped mountains of Tyrol. Here, we stumbled upon a tiny wine bar, which was packed with interesting wines. The food selection to accompany the wines was very basic, artisan cheese and cured meats. So simple and yet, what more could you want?
This trip symbolised our first serious conversation on the possibility of owning and running our very own wine bar. Five years on, we fulfilled our dream and created 'Wine Industry, Vinoteca y Picoteo' in the thriving area of Santa Catalina, Palma de Mallorca.
With more than 20 years experience in the hospitality industry, and his combination of professionalism, enthusiasm and language skills, it seemed only right for Ivan to take control of 'the front of house', whilst my role was much more centred around the kitchen and creative elements of the business.
The wine bar in Lienz that kickstarted our dream!
Wine Industry, Vinoteca y Picoteo
As our wine bar business evolved and we learnt to adapt to the needs of our customers, we became increasingly aware that our loyal clients continued to return to our cosy bar because of our approachable nature, our down to earth attitude and our willingness to share our passion and knowledge of the wines we sourced.
The homemade tortilla may have had a small influence as well!
Our reputation steadily grew and Wine Industry became a popular venue for good quality, lesser known wines as well as simple, homemade tapas and sharing platters at fair prices.
However, four and a half years on, we decided to diversify and re-shape our business model so that we could become more flexible and connect more easily with you.
In order to be able to do this, we sold the wine bar to give ourselves the freedom to push our business in this new direction. Our new business model, 'Bringing wine to you' launched in March 2019 and our focus is now on distribution, provisioning, wine tasting experiences and wine tours.
Ivan Gonzalez Gainza
Iván's passion for wine developed during his 20+ years working in the hospitality industry. He loves the diversity that wine has to offer and he also loves a wine with a great story behind it. Not only does Iván live, breathe, talk and sip wine but he also writes about it every month for The Islander magazine. It's no wonder he gained a distinction in his WSET Diploma exam last November!
Lara Roxanne Corfield
Lara learnt to appreciate wine through her parents. They were always looking for little known gems to surprise and excite themselves and their friends, often with a bias towards Italy! Lara works behind the scenes at Wine Industry, to ensure the business runs smoothly on a day to day basis. She will usually be the one answering your emails and responding to any enquiries.
