Los Magines by Maisulan is an exceptional red wine made from a range of grape varieties (Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano, White Garnacha, Malvasía, and Viura) that are harvested from a 75-year-old vineyard located in Moreda, Rioja Alavesa. The Valdemarra vineyard is at an altitude of 480 metres and consists of stony clay soil with lime.

In the vineyard, Eva and Luis prioritise organic farming methods without the use of chemicals. They use hydroalcoholic extracts to strengthen the vines' immune system, making them more resistant to animal attacks or fungal diseases. They also use low doses of copper only when the entire crop is at risk.

This one hectare vineyard is planted in the traditional goblet style, with all work done manually. It yields approximately 2000 bottles, depending on the year.

The grapes are destemmed in the winery and processed in a 2,500 kg truncated cone-shaped cement tank with temperature control. The winemakers perform two soft punchdowns twice a day and ferment the grapes with indigenous yeast. After fermentation, they transfer the wine to 225 and 500-litre French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation.

The wine remains in barrels for 9 to 14 months, depending on the tasting. When the wine is removed from the barrels, it rests in a stainless steel tank for 2-3 months. After a gentle filtering, the wine is bottled and kept in the cellar for a minimum of six months.

Here's a taste of what you can expect from this wine:

  • Appearance: An intense cherry red colour.
  • Aromas: Aromas of dark fruits with notes of mountain herbs.
  • Palate: A powerful red wine with ripe fruit flavours, spicy hints, ripe tannins, and a saline finish.
  • Pairing: Try pairing it with a vegetarian paella, truffle dishes and steak.

This is a red wine to enjoy now or keep for a few years!
