A beautifully expressive Verdejo from the heart of Rueda, Javier Ruiz Verdejo Sobre Lías showcases the elegance and character that careful vineyard management and lees ageing can achieve.
Produced from selected family-owned vineyards in Villanueva de Duero, the grapes are harvested at night to preserve freshness before spending 2–3 months ageing on their fine lees with regular batonnage. The result is a white wine with remarkable texture, vibrant fruit and a long, elegant finish.
Awarded 92 Points and a Silver Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards, this is a superb example of a premium Verdejo and an excellent choice for lovers of fresh yet textured Spanish white wines.
Winemaking
The grapes come from carefully selected family-owned vineyards in Villanueva de Duero, where sustainable farming practices and naturally low yields help produce fruit of exceptional quality.
Harvesting takes place exclusively at night, allowing the grapes to arrive at the winery cool and in perfect condition while preserving their delicate aromas.
Following a short cold maceration and gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 13°C. The wine is then aged on its fine lees for between two and three months with regular batonnage, adding texture, richness and complexity while maintaining the vibrant freshness that defines great Verdejo.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Bright and crystal clear with a pale straw-yellow colour and youthful green reflections.
- Aromas: Aromatic and expressive, offering ripe tropical fruit, citrus notes and hints of white flowers. Typical Verdejo aromas of fennel, aniseed and freshly cut grass add complexity and freshness.
- Palate: Dry, smooth and beautifully rounded thanks to ageing on the fine lees. Layers of tropical fruit are balanced by vibrant acidity, creating a wine with excellent texture, freshness and length. The finish is long and elegant with Verdejo's characteristic gentle bitterness.
