Smooth, Textured & Fruit-Driven – A Modern Rioja Blend from Sierra de Yerga
Monte Gatún Tinto is part of the village wine range from Arizcuren, sourced from various vineyard plots around Quel, on the slopes of the Sierra de Yerga.
This wine reflects the past, present, and future of Rioja Oriental - combining traditional varieties like Garnacha and Mazuelo with Tempranillo and smaller proportions of native grapes to create a balanced, expressive blend.
Winemaking
The grapes are sourced from multiple vineyard plots located between 530 and 600 metres altitude, with predominantly north-facing exposures that help retain freshness.
Harvest is carried out manually at the beginning of October, with careful selection and moderate yields of around 6,000 kg/ha.
Each variety is fermented separately using spontaneous fermentation, without selected yeasts, preserving varietal identity and terroir expression. The final blend is assembled prior to malolactic fermentation.
The wine is aged for 12 months, with 30% in Slavonian oak barrels and 70% in concrete tanks, achieving a balance between structure and purity of fruit.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep ruby red with bright, youthful reflections.
Aromas: Intense forest fruits, ripe figs, and subtle herbal notes of thyme and lavender.
Palate: Smooth and textured, with silky tannins and a generous core of dark fruit. Easy to drink yet structured, with a balanced and persistent finish.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Serve at 14–16ºC. Ideal with grilled meats, pasta dishes, roasted vegetables, and Mediterranean cuisine. Also works well with charcuterie and casual dining.
