A Pie de Tierra was established in 2017 with 20 hectares of vineyards, producing a total of 10,000 bottles of wine.  Aitor Paul, a sommelier at Lavinia, and David Villamiel, a winegrower from Méntrida are the two men behind this new winery.  They both trained at the Professional School of Viticulture.

 

El Surco, previously known as A Dos Manos, transforms its image and name for the 2022 vintage.

It is crafted from Grenache grapes sourced from a 40-year-old vineyard with granitic soil featuring a silty texture and deep undulations.

 

"El Surco," translating to "With the Two Hands," signifies the winemakers' strong belief in Méntrida's Garnacha grape and its distinct terroir. The wine reflects the elegant, red-fruited and "strawberry-like" Garnacha style that the high-altitude sand and granite soils of Sierra de Gredos can produce beautifully.

 

WINEMAKING

The grapes were manually harvested from old vines following biodynamic practices. They were placed in traditional rubber buckets, rather than boxes, to keep them cool in the morning and to avoid the extreme heat of summer.

 

Vinification was conducted naturally with spontaneous fermentation and indigenous yeasts.

A high proportion of whole clusters were used (60%), with 40% destemmed.

Maceration took place for 20 to 25 days, followed by ageing for 10 months in used 225-litre French oak barrels.

 

This village wine is meticulously produced in an artisanal manner with minimal intervention. It remains unfiltered and unclarified, preserving its authenticity.

 

TASTING NOTES

  • Colour: Transparent cherry red.
  • Aromas: Delicate scents of strawberries, spices, raspberries, red cherries, and rose petals.
  • Palate: A delightful, fruit-forward red wine with a tangy acidity. It is well balanced, with a good length, and subtle barrel ageing. An easy-drinking Garnacha experience.
  • Serving Temperature: Best served at 16ºC
  • Pairing: Ideal with hearty Spanish dishes like slow-roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic, white meats with strong sauces, and powerful, aromatic meat stews of pork, lamb, duck, or pheasant.
